Dance Instructor / Choreographer

ARTS DETROIT is a performing arts school with a focus in Musical Theatre education, offering voice, piano, acting, and starting this summer, dance. We believe in offering the highest quality programming to our students, who are primarily youth, in order to help them grow personally and artistically; we believe in fostering a positive and nurturing atmosphere in which to develop while also challenging students to be their best artistic self.




We are seeking a dance instructor who has a passion for teaching children from toddlers to teens who can serve as a foundation as we build our dance program. Must be able to teach ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, hip hop, and musical theatre, with a strong background in either ballet or musical theatre. Opportunity to develop position into school’s Dance Director possible.


Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching, honed from personal performing experience on a professional level and have a strong sense of pedagogy of teaching.




Direct supervisor: Executive Director
Compensation: Negotiable based on experience and education


Summer requirements:
Max hours: 14 per week
Days: 2-3 per week in the evenings Monday-Thursday


2018-19 school year requirements:
Max hours: 24 per week
Days: 3-5 per week; evenings Monday-Thursday / mornings and early afternoons Saturday




  • Teach and lead classes to students as young as 3-years-old
  • Provide students with a strong technical foundation and promote long-term physical health
  • Plan lessons and choreography in advance to help students technically develop and prepare for performances
  • Must have time management and organizational skills in a classroom setting
  • Ability to actively engage students in order to maintain participation and a proactive, distraction-free learning environment
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned or requested by the Executive Director
  • Willingness to help develop long-term dance programming goals a plus




  • Must be at least 18 years of age 
  • Knowledge of current dance techniques and trends with a strong background in classical technique required
  • Certifications in a variety of dance genres, including cecchetti, a plus
  • Must have a GED or High School Diploma; 4 year degree preferred (may substitute with professional experience)
  • Preference given to candidates with recent or current professional dance credits
  • Must have at least three years of experience teaching dance
  • Have strong verbal communication skills to communicate professionally
  • The ability to work in a team and be a team player with your staff members
  • Be able to problem solve, excel with minimal supervision, and work under pressure
  • Must be professional, punctual, and adapt to changes that may occur during program
  • Be willing to learn and implement new strategies and receive guidance from the Executive Director
